Try backing up to the hard disk to see where the problem lies. If that works, the problem is that you don't have the necessary software on your computer to write directly to a CD.
Windows cannot treat a CD drive as if it were a normal hard disk without special software called packet-writing software. Some common packet-writing software applications are:
